a lesson from driving

as i drove on the freeway today, i wondered (more than once) what would happen if i suddenly let the car veer from its path. chances are it would (and i would) escape unscathed. but the higher likelihood is that we wouldn't. what keeps us in our own lanes? the body's (or mind's) aversion to pain/injury? and so is there the path of dharma that the soul knows it must traverse. what keeps us forever prone to veering off this path? mustn't we act against the pain, the injury of our soul just as well? just a thought.

What a wonderful analogy! And it seems you have provided the answer in your previous post :)

Another part of what keeps us in our lane when driving is our respect for the sanctity of other people's lives. We respect life -- ours and theirs -- out of gratitude for the privilege we have to be on this earth to experience all of the beauties and wonders of God's grace, including even those difficult situations that God provides us to enable us to grow spiritually.
We are motivated to act in a particular way (to follow the straight path) because we see that it is not only best for us but best for all concerned... that this ultimately leads to a system of greater order, harmony, unity, and progress...

i agree with what you say bb. and no analogy should be abandoned without a thorough analysis as you are so capable of doing :).
